Below Ground: A novelette

Professor Frankston has spent thirty years scraping the earth at some of the most mysterious archaeological sites on the planet. Now he's got his ultimate challenge - a structure twelve thousand years old that should not exist, built by people who had no business building it.

He has learned to manage the corrupt officials, the underfunding, the endlessly curious volunteers and the complete absence of anything that makes sense. He has not learned to manage what happens when the earth opens up and swallows him whole.

Below the ground lies a chamber that rewrites everything humanity thinks it knows about itself. And at its centre, something that has been waiting in the dark for a very long time.

Some mysteries are buried for a reason.

Below Ground is a darkly funny, gripping and deeply unsettling story about the most extraordinary archaeological discovery in human history — and the man spectacularly unqualified to handle it.

A novelette of approximately 10,000 words.
